Bethel-Wade Hampton
The Bethel-Wade Hampton Health Area
contains the Bethel Census Area and the Wade Hampton Census
Area. Bethel is the hub for services in the region. Other
cities include Saint Mary's, Emmonak, Alukanuk, and Hooper
Bay. The Yukon-Kuskowkim Delta is primarily tundra, and
there is no road system. Most employment is linked to
transportation or health and human services. The Yupik
Eskimos of the region continue to speak their own language,
and many combine subsistence activities with employment.
This is the youngest region in Alaska, with a median age
of 25 in Bethel and 20 in Wade Hampton.
