Frequently Asked Questions
| Q: Who
will decide what drugs will be listed on the PDL? |
| A: The
preferred drug list will be developed by the Pharmacy
and Therapeutics Committee, a group of Alaska health
care professionals. They will develop the list to
meet the needs of Medicaid recipients. The list may change over time, as Alaskan’s health care
needs change. |
| |
| Q: How
will a PDL help cut prescription drug costs? |
| A: Pharmacy
costs will be reduced by a partnership with drug manufacturers,
who will give supplemental rebates to reduce the cost
of the drugs. |
| |
| Q: What
drugs will be on the PDL? |
| A: All
of the current Medicaid available drugs are to remain
covered. Drugs in specified drug classes will be approved
for the PDL based on clinical efficacy, safety and
cost. Preferred drugs will not require any special
authorization. |
| |
| Q: What
about drugs not on the PDL? |
| A: Non-preferred
drugs will require the prescriber to document the
medical necessity of using the drug. Certain groups
of recipients may be exempt from the PDL requirements – for example, certain age groups. |
| |
| Q: What
is the timetable for the PDL? |
| A: The
goal is to start phasing in the PDL drug classes by
Spring 2004. The Committee will recommend the first
drug classes by December 2003. Processing the claims
for the first therapeutic classes will start in early
2004. The Committee’s recommendations will be
published and interested parties can submit written
comments. |
